RYUKU OTSUKA
Ryuku Otsuka is a Japanese contemporary artist based in Paris whose work bridges traditional craft and contemporary expression. Drawing on the centuries-old practice of Nihonga—Japanese painting with natural mineral pigments—Otsuka explores cultural memory, authenticity, and the enduring value of handmade work.
Having left Japan at fifteen, Otsuka experienced an early loss of cultural identity that later shaped his artistic path. His meticulous, layered brushwork reflects both a meditative philosophy and a deep respect for the artisans who create the pigments, papers, and materials essential to Nihonga. He envisions future projects that will involve direct collaborations with master craftspeople—lacquer painters (塗師), Buddhist wood sculptors (仏師), and ceramists (工芸家)—to expand the dialogue between traditional techniques and contemporary art. Otsuka earned a BFA in Art, Media, and Technology from Parsons Paris in 2021.
JULIA EICHLER
Julia Eichler explores urban traces of time and place them in new three dimensional contexts, focusing on the possibilities of the periphery. Using papier-mâché as medium, she recreates architectural surfaces and creates site-specific snapshots of reality. Traces of time and human intervention are reflected in structure and color. Walls are stripped of their skin. These wall skins are assembled into imaginary building structures that appear massive, heavy, and real, yet there seems to be a flaw in the system. Her working method produces objects that could be described as “glitches”—as errors in reality, as shifts and breaks within it.
